Africa's biggest junior chess tournament just opened its doors for 2026. FIDE and the International School Chess Federation are running the African Continental Stage of the World Schools Team Championship in Cape Town next July. Schools from all FIDE member federations can register their teams now.

The competition runs July 6-11, 2026, and feeds directly into the WSTC Grand Final. Winners at the continental level advance to compete against champions from other continents for the world title. This marks the second continental qualifier in the new championship cycle, aligned with FIDE's Year of Chess in Education 2026 initiative.

The format keeps junior chess competitive and international. African schools have a genuine pathway to world championship glory, not just continental bragging rights. Top teams get their shot at the Grand Final without slogging through multiple qualification rounds.

Freedom Holding Corp backs the event financially, which matters. School chess needs sponsorship to survive and grow, especially across Africa where resources are tighter than in Europe or the Americas. With backing secured, organizers can focus on logistics and recruitment.

Registration is live. Schools have time to assemble their squads and start preparation. For countries building their chess programs from the ground up, this continental stage doubles as a scouting ground. It's when young talent gets noticed beyond their home federations.
