Over 500 players from 14 Commonwealth nations converged in Sri Lanka for the 2026 Commonwealth Chess Championship, running May 17-25. The event draws the sport's top brass. FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich attended the opening ceremony alongside Sri Lanka's Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sunil Kumara Gamage.

The Chess Federation of Sri Lanka is running a nine-day program with multiple competitive formats. The Open Section sits at the heart of the event, but organizers also structured age-group competitions for women and youth players covering Under 8 through Under 18 categories in classical time controls. The schedule opens with Rapid and Blitz tournaments across the first three days, giving players a chance to warm up before the main classical contests begin.

Luxman Wijesuriya, president of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka, called hosting the championship a major honor for the nation. Sri Lanka executed the hosting duties on behalf of both the Commonwealth Chess Association and FIDE, positioning this tournament as a centerpiece event for Commonwealth chess.

The championship structure reflects modern tournament design. Classical formats let players showcase calculation and preparation. The Rapid and Blitz events at the start allow younger and less experienced competitors to build confidence early. This mix of competition types and age categories ensures the championship serves multiple levels of the Commonwealth chess ecosystem.
