Sr. Miriam Duggan Primary School from Uganda won the African Continental Stage of the World Schools Team Championship 2026, holding their nerve through the final two rounds in Stellenbosch to claim the title.

The tournament delivered more than just results. Players from across the continent forged new friendships, attended masterclasses and workshops, and many competed internationally for the first time. For the Ugandan team, the week culminated in a championship victory that will earn them a spot at the Grand Final in December alongside two other African qualifiers.

The top seeds delivered when it mattered. Sr. Miriam Duggan's triumph reflects solid preparation and composed play under pressure. In school chess, these continental championships carry real weight. They shape young talent, expose players to different styles, and create the pipeline for future African chess strength.

Three African teams now head to the Grand Final. The championship format worked: it pushed the favorites but also gave underdogs meaningful competition throughout the week. Uganda's win marks another chapter in African school chess's growing competitive depth. How the team performs at the December Grand Final will tell us whether this continental victory represents a breakthrough moment or a single strong performance.
