Francisco Fiorito, 15, won the Andorra Open with 7½/9, holding off top seed Miguel Santos by half a point. The Argentine IM lost only once, in round four, then dominated the final stretch with four wins in his last five games. He beat GMs Egor Bogdanov and Andrey Sumets down the stretch to seal the title.
Fiorito showed the resilience that separates tournament winners from the rest. One loss at the midpoint could have derailed him. Instead, he kept pushing and found a higher gear when it mattered most. That's the sign of a player built for the elite level.
WGM Lile Koridze had the tournament's other headline performance. The Georgian, seeded 79th, posted 7/9 and secured an IM norm. That's the kind of breakout result that changes a player's trajectory. Koridze proved she belongs in much stronger competition.
Santos, the top seed, couldn't convert his status into the trophy. He finished second, which is respectable, but tournaments are won not by the best players on paper. They're won by the players who execute under pressure. Fiorito did that. He's clearly one to watch at the highest levels.
