FIDE is launching its inaugural World Amateur Rapid & Blitz Championships next summer in Abuja, Nigeria. The event runs August 1-8, 2026, and welcomes any player rated below 2300 through their national federation.
This is a significant expansion for FIDE's amateur circuit. Unlike most world championships that restrict entries, federations can send unlimited players. The tournament splits into Open and Women's sections across three rating bands: under 2300, under 2000, and under 1700.
Women's divisions will only run if they attract at least twenty players from at least two continents. That threshold matters. It shows FIDE is serious about growing women's participation without diluting competition. If Nigeria's location draws strong African female participation plus entries from other regions, the women's sections could be substantial.
The sub-2300 rating ceiling targets serious amateurs and lower-rated professionals. Players hunting for international titles without the elite grind will find genuine opportunity here. Rapid and blitz formats mean multiple games in a shorter timeframe, so even a player from a smaller federation has realistic chances to compete.
Registration opens now. National federations need to organize internally and submit entries. If you're rated under 2300 and want a world championship medal without facing Giri or Keymer, this is your path. Abuja becomes a chess hub for a week in August 2026.
