Sauat Nurgaliyev claimed his first Kazakhstan Championship title in a tight open field. The IM navigated a brutal 14-player round-robin in Astana where the field bunched at the top through eight rounds. Nurgaliyev shared first place with defending champion GM Kazybek Nogerbek and IM Zhandos Agmanov at 5.5/8, but Round 9 proved decisive. While Nogerbek and Agmanov drew, Nurgaliyev beat Vladislav Malygin and seized sole possession of first. He never relinquished it.

In the women's section, WIM Zarina Nurgalieva won her first national title in identical format. The championship ran May 2-12 at classical time controls (90 minutes plus 30-second increments), with both sections using 14-player round-robins.

The open section's extreme parity through the middle rounds showcased the depth of Kazakhstani chess. Most competitors clustered within rating range, meaning tactical execution and mental stamina separated winners from the field. Nurgaliyev's ability to convert pressure into results when the tournament hung in balance proved the difference.

Both champions crowned themselves in 2026, marking breakthrough performances for Nurgaliyev and Nurgalieva at the national level.
