Hilmir Freyurisson finally broke through. The IM claimed his first Icelandic Championship title by winning the 10-player round-robin in Reykjavik, defeating FM Bárður Örn Birkisson in the final round to finish 7/9.

The tournament stayed wide open until the end. Going into round nine, three players could still win it. Freyurisson, defending champion Vignir Vatnar Stefansson, and GM Hannes Stefansson all had realistic chances. Freyurisson seized control when it mattered most.

His performance was clean and decisive. He recorded eight wins and one loss across nine games. Zero draws. That's the kind of aggressive, uncompromising play that wins national championships. No grinding, no hedge betting. He went for the throat.

Stefansson, the two-time defending champion, finished second with 6.5 points after beating Gudmundur Kjartansson in his final game. Hannes Stefansson took third with 6 points.

Freyurisson's maiden title at the classical level suggests he's ready to move up the rating ladder. At 23 or 24 years old, if he can replicate this form consistently, an IM norm and eventual GM title aren't distant dreams. Iceland has produced world-class talent before. Freyurisson just announced himself as the next candidate.
